PLUG-IN HYBRID

Our Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) technology – featured in the Lexus NX 450h+ – combines Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid performance with Electric Vehicle (EV) capability to give you outstanding refinement, electric range and efficiency in both EV and hybrid modes.

WHAT IS A PLUG-IN HYBRID OR PHEV CAR?

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) use a conventional petrol engine and an electric motor powered by a battery that can be recharged through the hybrid system or by connecting to an electricity supply – either at home or at one of thousands of charging stations available across the UK network. The large battery gives the NX 450h+ a range over 40 miles* in pure EV mode.

With a Lexus Plug-in Hybrid there are two power sources: a combustion petrol engine and a rechargeable electric battery. When charged it can perform as a pure electric car by selecting EV mode but when the battery gets depleted it combines petrol with renowned Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid technology for best efficiency. The pack that powers a PHEV car’s battery is larger than that in a standard hybrid, giving it the advantage that it can run for longer on pure electric power alone.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A PHEV?

It can offer a ‘best of both worlds’ solution to the car owner still unsure about going full electric. For example with the Lexus NX, utilising the electric motor for over 40 miles of a journey reduces petrol costs in addition to the lower road tax. There is no 'range anxiety' that comes from being solely reliant on the car's battery as the petrol engine acts as a back-up in instances when the electric battery runs low. A PHEV is ideal for shorter journeys but also a superb choice when travelling longer distances.

HOW DO YOU CHARGE A PLUG-IN HYBRID?

PHEV cars charge their EV battery by attaching a cable to the vehicle and a power source. The EV battery in the NX 450h+ can be recharged either by connecting the car to a wallbox or through the self-charging functionality built into every Lexus hybrid.

By charging your car at home, or by using the extensive network of stations across the UK, you can drive without using petrol until the battery is depleted. Crucially, the system maintains high efficiency even when the battery is depleted. You can recharge by plugging-in the car or relying on the self-charging hybrid system to continue your journey.

At a basic level the Lexus NX plugs into your normal socket at home to charge it up. However, a Lexus wallbox is recommended to provide optimum charging at home.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE BATTERY RUNS OUT OF CHARGE?

In this case, the vehicle becomes an efficient self-charging hybrid with the petrol engine powering the car and recharging the battery. With the Lexus NX an element of self-charging will also take place meaning the battery will slowly be refilled when the conventional engine is in use.
